Son laments ‘slow progress’ by Jamaican police in finding mother’s killer
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The son of a Canadian woman who was found dead in a house on Poinciana Drive in Discovery Bay, St Ann, on December 30, 2013, is concerned about the “slow progress” being made in the investigation of his mother’s death, the Toronto Star has reported.
According to the Canadian newspaper, the son has said that he believes his mother, Shirley Lewis-McFarlane, 53, was killed for money.
“It was about money,” said Shawn Gavigan, 27, who had one last phone conversation with his mother on December 29, the day before she was found dead in her beachside rental home, the Toronto Star reported on Saturday.
“She just got mixed up with the wrong person,” Gavigan was quoted as saying.
The newspaper also reported that the police have said they have not yet established a motive for the murder, but that they have a man who is a person-of-interest in custody. However, he is not being considered as a suspect at this time.
Autopsy results released last week, according to the Toronto Star, show that Lewis-McFarlane died of blunt force trauma to her face and asphyxiation. Bones in her hands were also broken.
“It takes them forever to do anything,” Gavigan said. “They have been doing the best job to their ability, but there aren’t as many police in Jamaica as they have in the USA or Canada.”
Lewis-McFarlane’s family, including her two other children Jasmine and Amanda, have started an online fund-raiser on GoFundMe.com to raise C$10,000 for a funeral and headstone, the Toronto Star reported.
Lewis-McFarlane is reported to have been travelling back and forth to Jamaica for nearly 14 years before deciding to permanently settle in Discovery Bay. She married her second husband, a Jamaican man named Carl McFarlane in 2001.
Gavigan still cannot believe his mother is dead, the Toronto Star reported.
