TEENAGER WINS EVOQUE
EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD Shaquille Sewell walked away with the grand prize of a 2013 Range Rover Evoque in Digicel’s Brighten Someone’s Christmas promotion held at St William Grant Park in downtown Kingston, on Wednesday.
“It’s a dream come true,” he managed to say as he was besieged by a host of well-wishers.
Sewell — who does not have a driver’s licence — said he plans to start taking lessons before the end of the month. However, his father Shaun has more immediate plans.
“I’m going to have to be driving him around for a while until he gets his driver’s licence,” said Shaun, who, along with his father Robert, had accompanied the former St Mary Technical High student to the event.
Sewell, who resides between the parishes of Kingston and St Mary, said the vehicle will be his primary means of transport when he resumes school.
“I plan to do some IT [information technology] courses at Exced [Excelsior Community College] or UTech [University of Technology] perhaps in September, and the Evoque will come in useful as I continue my education,” he said.
The teenager said there’s one place he must visit when he gets the green light to drive.
“I’m heading to the beach once I get to drive it,” he added.
The Range Rover Evoque has a base price of $9 million and is distributed by ATL Automotive.
Sewell was one of five lucky Digicel customers vying for the grand prize. The others were Shanique Brown, Christopher Binns, Michael Leslie, and Norman Blincholm.
The five finalists were called to the stage and asked to find a white ball in an inflated rubber pool filled with various coloured balls. Each white ball contained a key which would open a numbered chest which listed what each participant would win.
The remaining contestants shared gifts including: one year’s free data service, $20,000 in HiLo shopping vouchers and Digicel call credit, and a DL600 phone loaded with $5,000 worth of call credit.
The event marked the close of Digicel’s Brighten Someone’s Christmas, which ran for eight weeks.
“This promotion has been extremely successful for Digicel and its customers with over 240,000 winners, including creating eight millionaires, and brightening up the Christmas for Shaquille,” said Annalise Harewood, Digicel’s head of recharge.
With the Christmas promotion behind them, Jacqueline Burrell-Clarke, public relations manager Digicel Jamaica, said that Jamaica can look forward to more innovative marketing as they look towards their summer promotion.
Rising Star winner Verlando Small and I-Octane performed at the event.
