$10 million of UWI 5K funds finances scholarships
TEN million dollars of the total amount raised from the second staging of the Caribbean Broilers Group/University of the West Indies (UWI) 5K Run/Walk held last November will be disbursed as scholarships in the coming months.
Select students of UWI who have performed outstandingly in the areas of academics and sports will have the opportunity of benefiting, it was announced at a press briefing at the UWI Regional Headquarters on December 19.
Last year, $18 million was disbursed from the total amount raised from the inaugural staging of the run/walk. Twenty young men and women in their first and second years at the university were awarded scholarships from that disbursement.
The CB Group/UWI 5K is the brainchild of Douglas Orane, Michael Lee-Chin and G Raymond Chang, all honorary graduates of UWI, as a part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Jamaica’s independence.
Matthew Lyn, CEO of title sponsors CB Group, said when approached in 2012, the company never hesitated since tertiary level students stood to benefit.
“CB Group’s involvement is just an example of how corporate Jamaica can offer aid to tertiary education and consequently, national development,” Lyn said.
The run/walk was held on Sunday, November 17. Students and faculty, along with several alumni members, rallied to support the event through participation, volunteerism and donations.
