EDWIN Allen High School, through outstanding performances from their female athletes, topped the awards at the prize-giving ceremony for the recently concluded Pure Water/JC Track & Field meet held at Jamaica College yesterday.

Leading the way for Edwin Allen was Class Two runner-up field athlete Paul-Ann Gayle (18 points) who established the meet record for the discus and placed second in the shot put event.

She was supported by her fellow Class Two teammate Janell Fullerton (19 points), who was awarded champion of her class for winning the shot put event and placing second in the discus. Lotavia Brown (14 points) was named Class Four champion, while Rochelle Frazer (18 points) won the Class One championship.

The other runner-up athletes were Monique McPherson (16 points) of St Jago in the Class One category; Chris-Ann Bryan (18 points) of Wolmer’s Girls was runner-up to Britney Dixon (20 points) of Vere Technical in Class Three, and Shade Parr (10 points) in Class Four.

Jamaica College made a clean sweep in the Class One category for males where Clayton Brown (16 points) won ahead of Alec-Vern Longmore (14 points). Class Two was won by Shane Buchannan of Kingston College, just ahead Vicarie Elliot (15 points) of Munro College.

Keenon Lawrence, who copped two awards on the day, won the Class Three category with 20 points, with Julian Salmon of Ardenne second with 15 points.

The outstanding performers awards went to Paul-Ann Gayle of Edwin Allen followed by Britney Dixon of Vere Technical. The male section was won by Ryan Butler of Holmwood followed by young Keenon Lawrence.

The 21st staging of the development meet, which was sponsored by Peak Bottling Company Limited through its Pure Water brand for the first time, was deemed a success as it saw a massive turnout of 2,048 athletes participating.

Of that number 1,029 were males. There was a total of 238 teams and six records were broken, five in the male section — Ryan Butler 800m, Chad Walker (St Jago) 100m, Ronaldo Reid (Munro) 100m, Chad Wright (Unattached) discus and Dejour Russell (Calabar) long jump. The record discus throw by Paul-Ann Gayle was the only female standout.

Wayne Robinson was this year’s honoree, while the two coaches of the outstanding performers, Marlon Gayle of Edwin Allen and Edward Hector of Holmwood Technical, were also presented rewards.
