LUPITA FEVER!

Get the Look

There comes a time when a muse so inspiring comes along and our minds are so ignited that there is no way we can subtract or condense their look into an essence or isolated feature. The 12 Years A Slave actress and fashion’s newest it girl Lupita Nyong’o is one such source of inspiration and admiration and this is one such moment. Up until now Lupita has only been titillating us with stylish turns on red-carpets everywhere as she promoted her critically-acclaimed film (and award-favourite) and as buzz around her much-praised performance gained momentum and the numerous supporting actress nominations started to flood in. But last Sunday night at the Golden Globes Nyong’o was taking no prisoners when she floored us all in a head to toe look that instantly catapulted her cachet to a-list echelons, and that pop culture pundits are still trying digest almost a week later! And now that we’re sufficiently obsessed, we decided take a detour from a our usual, more singular approach to Get The Look to break down everything Lupita-related you saw on that red-carpet outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with behind-the-scenes tidbits from her glam squad, which comprises Nick Barose on makeup duty, Larry Sims on hair (employing an all-Chanel-everything approach) and Micaela Erlanger, Nyong’o trusty stylist, give us a master class in colour storytelling.

HAIR

For girls, who have a similar texture and cut to Lupita, Sims took her tresses from their usual curly closed crop proportions and straighten it upwards for a sleek and dramatic look with these simple and easy steps.

1. Use a rattail comb to create a side part that runs all the way back across the crown of the head, Direct hair on both banks of the part away from each other.

2. Apply Smooth ‘N Shine Polishing Go Pro Curls Curl-Licious Mist to refresh and activate your natural curls, then follow with Smooth ‘N Shine Polishing Go Pro Butter Bouncin’ to add texture and hydration.

3. Finish with got2b 2sexy Voluptuous Volume hairspray to lock the style in place.

SKINCARE & MAKE-UP

Celeb hairstylist Barose turned to the ancient Egyptian queens as the inspiration for Lupita’s Golden Globe palette, here’s what you’ll need to know:

1. Apply CHANEL Sublimage La Crème Ultimate Skin Regeneration Texture Fine moisturizer and CHANEL Sublimage La Crème Yeux Ultimate Regeneration Eye Cream to create a luminous base. Since this a red carpet affair and 9-to-5 office look, apply a little more moisturizer and eye cream than you typically would and allow products to be absorbed by the skin while continue with other aspects of the pprocess such as your hair. Before applying your make-up, blot away any excess left behind by the pores.

2. To illuminate skin and brighten up the centre of face apply CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15 in No. 70 along the T-zone, side of the nose, on the chin, and a touch on the cheeks. For skin tone as deep as Lupita you want to do the opposite of contour — you want to, instead, highlight. Achieve this by dusting the tops of the cheekbones with CHANEL Blush Duo Tweed Effect Brun Rosé.

3. To achieve the eye focus of this look, define and ffill in your brows with CHANEL Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Noir Cendré. Add a touch of gold to lids by combining CHANEL Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Complice with CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Vision on top. To highlight Sims’s Eqyptian theme line the rims of eyes with Ligne Graphique De Chanel Liquid Liner in Noir leaving a short winged flourish in the corners of the eyes. To add little more animation and definition to the eyes apply CHANEL Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer in Blue Jean, a shimmery royal blue pencil, underneath her lower lash-line. For more cat-like elongation coat the outer lashes with more CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir that the inner lashes, applying the first coat horizontally and the second coat vertically.

4. For the lips, layer CHANEL Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Colour in Rouge Profond with Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Pirate, using an angled lip brush, to achieve a deeper red than the Ralph Lauren column itself. You want lips and dress to be in the same hue family and not matchy-matchy with is shades were matched to a tee. To complete this lip focus, apply CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Vision down the centre of lips with a lip brush to add a golden glaze for an added twist and three-dimensionality.

A TONAL STORY IN RED

According to New York Post’s Page Six the two designer labels of Gucci and Prada were duking it out to see who would dress the actress come Golden Globes but in the end the task went to Ralph Lauren. Stylist-to-the-stars Micaela Erlanger cherry-picked for Lupita a bold red strapless column with attached floor-sweeping cape from the label’s Spring 2014 collection and paired it the ensemble with solid rose gold miniaudiere from Monica Rich Kosann, and Fred Leighton yellow gold diamond studs, vintage yellow gold and diamond cocktail rings, and a vintage yellow gold and diamond pinky ring. For your next social engagement here are our recommendations for taking the plunge into singular colour!

1. Pick one colour and go bold. If you don’t want to match shades exactly, at least remain within the colour family. In the case of reds, think

2. Eschew prints for solids, this allows the colour to take centrestage and gives you the opportunity to experiment with sculptural silhouettes which make for stronger style statements.

3.Yellow gold and rose gold are great accent colours to pair with brazen or daring colour such as primary red.
