New Green stay perfect in Manchester Major League
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — New Green widened their gap at the top of both the overall and Zone Two points standings in the Manchester Captain’s Bakery Major League following the latest round of games.
The Courtney Jackson-coached team blanked their previously unbeaten Porus 3-0 on Sunday at Brooks Park to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season after four games.
Entering this contest, New Green — the current Manchester Knockout champions — were expected to face a stern test from their Zone Two rivals. Instead, it has so far proved to be their easiest win of the season, pushing them five points clear of their closest challengers in the race for the mid-season final.
Porus, who were joined on seven points by three other teams (Hillstars, Greenvale United and Comfort), now have serious work to do if they are to make the incentive final.
Rather than the top two on the overall points standing, the February 9 final will be contested by the zone leaders. It so happens that Porus, currently second on the overall table, are drawn alongside New Green whom they trailed by five points in Zone Two.
Meanwhile, defending champions Alligator Pond maintained their unbeaten start to the season following a 1-1 stalemate with Mile Gully. Unfortunately, the south Manchester team are still searching for their first win of the campaign as all four of their games have so far ended in stalemates.
Their four points are only good enough for a seventh on the overall chart, but second in Zone One, given that five of the top six teams are from Zone Two. This also means a place in the mid-season final is still very much a possibility as they trail the Zone One leaders, Greenvale, by only three points.
Match Day Four results: Kendal 1-1 Land Settlement, Greenvale United 3-1 Villa United, Mile Gully 1-1 Alligator Pond, Downs 1-2 Comfort, New Green 3-0 Porus, Grey Ground 1-3 Hillstars.
