Charlton booked an FA Cup fourth-round date with Huddersfield Town last night after defeating Oxford United at the fourth time of asking.

A brace from Yann Kermorgant and a Danny Green goal condemned the League Two side after two postponements for waterlogged pitches and a drawn match in the initial game at the Valley.

This was the second knockout defeat inflicted by Chris Powell’s on Oxford this season after also claiming victory in the Capital One Cup last August and can be seen as a timely boost to Charlton’s fortunes after a run of four winless games.

They are out of the Championship relegation zone by goal difference only and will visit Huddersfield on Saturday buoyed by a professional display. Belgian entrepreneur Roland Duchatelet took over at the start of the month and spoke of restoring the club to the glory days in the Barclays Premier League.

The Kassam Stadium, with its three stands, may not be the most glamorous of destinations in the football landscape but the man who also owns Standard Liege will be pleased nonetheless.

Three previous attempts to find a winner between these clubs in football’s oldest competition failed. The first two matches were postponed because the Valley’s ill-equipped drainage system, while a Charlton fight-back from 2-0 down a week ago meant this replay in Oxfordshire.

There were so few chances and so many miss-placed passes early on that it seemed the tie would never be over.

The first effort took 14 minutes to arrive. Callum Harriott crossed from the left but Simon Church could only clip the ball past the near post.

Oxford, occupying the final play-off place in League Two, had to wait until just after the half hour for their first sight of goal. Even then Scott Davies could only head harmlessly wide.

The deadlock was broken after 35 minutes through the first shot on target. Church held up the ball at the edge of the box and rolled it to Kermorgant, who drove a low shot that goalkeeper Ryan Clarke could only palm into the top corner.

Kermorgant had scored an 82nd-minute equaliser in the initial game last week and this goal made it four in his last seven.

Three minutes later Church made Charlton’s second too. He collected Harriott’s flick on and rounded David Hunt’s last-ditch tackle before squaring to Danny Green, advancing off the left wing, who finished into the empty net.

Kermorgant put the game beyond doubt just before the hour with a deliciously curled free-kick from 25 yards. He saluted the travelling supporters, who must be glad this tie is finally over.
