SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — It will be a full house of entrants for the 31st Grace/STETHS Track and Field Classic to be held at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz today starting at 9:00 am with competition in the intermediate hurdles.
Reynaldo Walcott, one of the organisers, told the Jamaica Observer yesterday that they were expecting full fields in all events, as up to Thursday’s cut-off deadline for entries they had 25 high schools and were still getting calls yesterday morning asking to be entered.
A number of the top high schools, including reigning ISSA Girls’ champions Holmwood Technical High and the throwers from ISSA Boys’ champions Calabar High were down to
take part.
Edwin Allen High girls, Wolmer’s Boys’ School, hosts St Elizabeth Technical, Munro College, Vere Technical, Petersfield High, Mannings School and Green Island High are among the schools that have submitted entries.
Sections of western Jamaica have been affected by persistent rain all week but Walcott told the Observer that while it “has been overcast and cooler by Santa Cruz standards, we have not had any rain all week here”.
The 400m hurdles for Under-18 and Under-20 athletes will be the first event on the meet schedule, while there will also be competition in the 100m, 400m, and 1,500m, all classes; discus throw and shot put; high and long jump; as well as the 4x400m and distance medley relays.
