ALTHOUGH Kat CHR was weaned on reggae and dancehall music, alternative rock is what gets her blood pumping.

Signed to singer Diana King’s Think Like A Girl Music Inc, Kat (real name Katherine Williams) recently finished recording Gold, a four-track EP.

“It’s like a coming of age project for me. My music has always been true to my life,” she says. “These songs represent me to the fullest. I keep my thoughts golden, I keep my heart golden and inevitably, my art is golden.”

The tracks Over My Head, Mango Gold, and Turn Around were written by Kat and co-produced by Andrew ‘Preggs’ Thompson.

Gold is available on iTunes and will be officially released on February 25.

The 28-year-old singer/guitarist started out in 2005 with producers Quame Kandekor and Tyrone Jackson and her former manager Steve Wilson.

“Quame and Tyrone had this musical project called Vyce Cyty so we packed our instruments and headed to New York to seek a few gigs. I went on a prayer, a wing and a dream,” she recalled.

After returning to Jamaica, Kat performed at trendy St Andrew venues like Carlos Cafe. She said she met King through the Internet.

“She sent me a message online saying that she liked my music and that I should keep up the good work. I built the courage to ask her to take in my next performance at Village Cafe and she did, and we sang the single, And I.”

Soon after, Kat was being managed by King’s manager Simone Harris. The new partnership saw her playing guitar on King’s single, Closer, from the album Warrior Girl.

“The gigs just started rolling from there and I got a chance to perform at (Jamaica) Jazz and Blues in 2007 and 2008,” Kat stated.

In 2012, she was introduced to Damon Dash, influential producer and CEO of Roc A Fella Records. She says he invited her to the United States where she worked with him for about one year as a singer and guitarist on a 10-city tour.

With Dash calling the shots, she released the EP Love Cake, a six-song compilation produced by McKenzie Eddie.

“I later returned to Jamaica and begged Simone to take me back under her wings and she became my manager again. Shortly after I was signed to Diana’s label,” she said.

Kat is quick to point out that her goals are not lofty.

“I am not seeking fame. I just want to be successful. I aim at doing good music and I have no boundaries.”
