High Flyers gymnasts soar ahead of Florida meet
The ever-soaring High Flyers gymnasts flipped, rolled and danced their way into the hearts of spectators at a pre-tournament event put on by the Jamaica School Of Gymnastics (JSOG) at the Nishida’s Gym recently.
As a precursor to travelling overseas to take part in the Gasparilla Classic, the pre-competition exercise was aimed at enhancing support and sponsorship for the girls.
Also, the competition was used to score the girls as a means of measuring their skill and technique levels. The girls were judged on four areas — beam, vault, floor routine and bars.
The High Flyers didn’t disappoint as they scored well on all levels, with Level Three gymnast Mikayda Thomas earning the highest overall score of 36.7, which proved she has mastered all routines at that level and could soon be elevated to Level Five at the international level.
Director of Nishida’s Gym, Shin Nishida, states that he was impressed by the talent of the young girls, and if they are challenged more in training and remain focused, he is expecting great things from them in their upcoming competitions and beyond.
Coach Nadeen Whyte says she has a more positive and upbeat feeling about the girls going into the competition, and is anticipating a podium spot in all levels.
The high flyers will take part in the 26th Annual Gasparilla Classic in St Petersburg Tampa, Florida, later this month, where they will go up against teams from Canada, United States, South America, Mexico and the Bahamas.
After that, they are slated to take part in another competition in Bahamas on April 24.
The 21-member team is made up of (Level One) — Giselle Hunt, Charla Watson, Kimoya Banks, Tiandra Wallace, Aaliannyha Anderson, Alya-karan Reily, Brianna Ringling, Brianna Harris, Addison Morgan, Caylere Grant and Sarai Watson; (Level Two) — Tanasheree Danvers, Breonia Rowe, Amanda Lawrence, A’saisa Malcolm and Jordhan Donaldson and Amelia Drackett; (Level Three) — Tiffany Cameron, Mekayda Thomas, Alana- Kaye Morgan and Hawahi Spencer.
