Scammer said he was from Jamaica Publishers Clearing House
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A report on the ABC 7 Denver website is warning US nationals that there is no such entity as a Jamaican-based Publishers Clearing House. The caution came from a local District Attorney after a constituent received a fraudulent phone call, the report said.
According to the report, first Judicial District Attorney Pete Weir’s office said that their fraud hotline received a call from a US citizen who reported she had received a call from the fictional sweepstakes company.
The woman was told that she won US$1.3 million but she became suspicious when she noticed the call was coming from a cell phone with an 876 area code, the report said.
“Beware of any unsolicited call that may come from the Jamaican area code of 876 and includes an offer that sounds too good to be true. Hang up the phone,” Weir’s spokesman Pam Russell wrote in a press release.
The real Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes is a direct marketing company based in the United States. It has no Jamaican base and does not notify winners by phone, the report cautioned, adding that no one should send money to claim a prize.
