Beyond the finish line — Cawayne Jervis
Cawayne Jervis
NEXT to Andre Wellington, Champs was graced by the presence of another Kingston College sprinter, Cawayne Jervis.
Sharing much of the school’s burden in the sprint events, Jervis became a household name locally after performances in Class Two at Champs.
Cawayne participated in the Boys’ Champs from 2003 and last featured in the 2007 season, which turned out to be his last after injury took a toll on his body for the 2008 season.
He rose to fame in 2005, capturing the Class Two sprint double with times of 10.74 and 21.88 seconds, beating out the likes of Winston Barnes and Yohan Blake in the process.
In his last season he ran his personal best times — 10.45 in the 100m and 21.43 in the 200m. He managed a bronze medal in the 200m while also featuring in a powerful Class One sprint relay team that included Wellington, and lost to a Remaldo Rose-led record breaking Camperdown team.
He is currently a student at the University of the West Indies, with a career in athletics seemingly far from his mind.
