PHILADELPHIA, USA — Wolmer’s Boys’ Jaheel Hyde continued to conquer new territory after he won the Penn Relays high school boy 400m hurdles at Franklin Field yesterday in 51.13 seconds, the fourth fastest time ever run here, in his first trip to the event.

Despite complaining of fatigue after the hectic trip back from Martinique where he won the Under-18 Carifta Games title last week, to Kingston then to Philadelphia, Hyde told the Sunday Observer he was pleased with his performance.

His win made it a clean sweep for Jamaican high schools in the event after Vere Technical’s Andrenetta Knight won the girls equivalent on Thursday morning, the first time since 2006 that Jamaican schools achieved the feat. Shereen Pinnock of Edwin Allen and Wolmer’s Boys’ Josef Robertson had won that year.

Hyde’s time makes him the second fastest Jamaican ever at the event, behind former Jamaica College runner Kevin James’ 50.83 seconds set in 1994 and passing Gregory Little’s 51.45 seconds set in 2002, but trails Dwight Ruff’s record 50.47 seconds with Rickey Harris next on 50.63 seconds.

St Elizabeth Technical’s Marvin Williams was second to Hyde yesterday in 51.49 seconds, the sixth best ever here and helped pushed the Wolmer’s runner as he led for the first half of the race.

Hyde, who ran a National Junior Record 49.49 seconds to win at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Champs last month, pointed out that despite the poor weather conditions, his time yesterday was faster than the 51.21 he ran at CARIFTA last weekend.

He admitted that Williams’ race tactic to start fast proved a challenge, but once he caught the St Elizabeth Technical runner by the seventh hurdle, his speed took him clear as he powered home to the victory.

Jamaica College’s Jariel Cherrington, who won the first heat in 54.44 seconds, was eighth overall, Excelsior’s Johan Morgan ran 56.14 seconds for 15th, while Munro College’s Duran Crooks was 20th overall struggling home in 1:01.06 minutes.
