Typewriter pays tribute to Mark My Word
LAST year’s Superstakes winner, Typewriter, paid tribute to the late Triple Crown, former Superstakes, and 2010 Horse of Year winner Mark My Word, by landing the Mark My Word Trophy over 1,820 metres at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The event, which is confined to three year old and upwards Open Allowance company, to honour the Richard Azan-trained ‘super horse’, will be run annually on Labour Day.
Installed as the 1-9 favourite in a small field of seven runners, Typewriter was slowly out of the gate and was held in fourth position by Shane Ellis behind leaders Eastwood (O’Brien White up), Fantabulous (Kuri Powell), and Military Move ( Paul Francis in the saddle) passing the club-house turn and in no time the five-year-old moved down into second position at the six-furlong point when Fantabulous was sent into the lead.
When asked the go by Ellis, the Spencer Chung-trained Typewriter responded well and pulled alongside Fantabulous before he drew away from the field approaching the home bend.
Tuning for home well clear of his rivals, Ellis had a look under his right arm before he eased down the bay gelding by Western Classic-Docs’ Paladin by Boundary for a comfortable four-length victory over Military Move. All Correct (Dick Cardenas) finished another three-and-quarter lengths in third with Fantabulous completing the frame.
Owned by Robert Chung and WPV Chung, Typewriter ran the distance in a pleasing 1:56:3 minutes.
“The aim was to get a clean break and watch the pace up front and then let him (Typewriter) run his own race. Basically it was an easy race,” Ellis said in the winners’ enclosure.
Typewriter was the first of three winners for Ellis on the nine-race Labour Day card. Ellis’ other winner was the Anthony Nunes-trained Rock Union in the Labour Day Trophy over 1,200 metres. The four-year-old dark bay gelding by Seeking The Glory-Lady Lydia by Private Interview past the winning post four-and-a-half lengths in front of Reasonable Press (Dane Nelson doing duties) and Rolex (Kuri Powell up) in a time of 1:12:4 minutes. His third winner was aboard the first time runner, Lucky Michelle, in the seventh race over 1,400 metres for trainer Lorne Kirlew.
Racing continues today with the 74th running of the Lotto Classic (GR 1) for the Governor’s Cup for native-bred three-year-old Futurity over 2,000 metres and the 18th running of the Lotto Sprint Trophy (GR1), for three-year-old and upwards over 1,100 metres.
