Favourites bite the dust
Punters were left to ponder on Saturday last after the running of the 10 races on offer by the promoting company. Only one favourite obliged in those 10 races and that was in the first event when the Eddie Hamilton-trained, Paul Francis ridden Thornhill Lad obliged at odds of 3- 5.
After Thornhill Lad it was time for the outsiders with the longest odds winner on the day being Go Go Train, trained by Harry Parsard, who made a thumping move leaving the half mile to win easily at odds of 33-1, to return a win dividend of $1,731.
It was therefore quite surprising that the Sunrise 6 wager was caught by two punters who each received just over $800,000, there was however a carry-over of just over $1 million in the Twilight 6.
Rare win for rajiv chatrie
Get Them Girl, trained by Morris Powell, gave apprentice Rajiv Chatrie his first winner this year from 16 rides and fourth overall since he started riding at the Park on September 8, 2012. Rajiv Chatrie, who is the cousin of the more accomplished Aaron Chatrie, has struggled to find the winning post in his career to date and it is hoped that the win on Saturday will act as an incentive to the young man’s drive to secure himself as a meaningful rider.
With the requisite work and dedication the opportunity will come. Keep on trying young Rajiv.
Clifford atkinson jr finds the winners’ enclosure
Trainer Clifford Atkinson Jr, who has been really finding it hard to saddle winners finally found the winners’ enclosure for the first time this year after 11 attempts.
His first winner came when the seven-year-old Ovation, with Marc Griffiths in the saddle, came with a storming run to beat Stop A Gap going over 1,500 metres. The win by Griffiths continued his recent upward trend.
Griffiths has now ridden two winners since his career as an apprentice started on September 8, 2012. Those two winners were achieved this season from 39 rides. Let’s hope both Atkinson Jr and Griffiths continue in the same mode.
Chance ride does it for robles and el cliente
The Gordon Lewis-trained El Cliente provided jockey Ameth Robles with his first winner this season for only his sixth ride at Caymanas Park. Robles, who hails from Panama has been finding it very difficult this year getting the winners.
And as fate would have it his first win on El Cliente was a chance ride as nominated rider Rayan Wilson did not fulfil his listed assignments on the day.
Making good use of the opportunity provided, Robles produced El Cliente (Seeking The Glory – Rhythmical Rain) for a late run to win the Herald Printer Limited Trophy over 1,100 metres from Crucial Appeal in 1:08:3 minutes. Robles almost made it a double as his mount, All That Matters, failed to catch Beckham (Dane Nelson) going over 1,820 metres.
It was also a moment of redemption for the hard-knocking El Cliente who has raced 11 times since the start of the year, finishing second and third on a consistent basis before his win on Saturday.
His trainer Gordon Lewis is a patient man and this is a case of patience finally paying dividends. Congrats to Mr Robles and Mr Lewis.
