Jamaica notch third win in regional basketball tourney
TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands (CMC) — Jamaica posted their third straight win to continue their domination of the Women’s Caribbean Basketball Championship at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex here on Thursday.
Playing on day three of the regional tournament, Jamaica easily got past archrivals Trinidad and Tobago 49-35, to follow up victories against Guyana and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Jamaica controlled the game from the outset, posting a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before taking a 27-17 advantage at half-time. T&T attempted to assert themselves in the third quarter, out-scoring Jamaica 12-11 but failed to find the explosive spark needed in the final quarter, to gain a positive result.
For the winners, Jennifer George scored 15 points and pulled down ten rebounds while Shenneika Smith chipped in with 11 points and six assists.
T&T failed to get anyone in double figures, with Rhonda John-Davis the best scorer with nine points.
Meanwhile, St Vincent and the Grenadines grabbed their first win with a blow-out 73-57 victory over Guyana. They were powered by Shavern Weekes who scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds while Sorayah Williams supported with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Vasha Adams was also outstanding, netting ten points and hauling down 13 boards.
For Guyana, Sonia Rodney scored 13 points while Shakeila Sampson chipped in with 11 points.
The game was as good as over when SVG rushed to a 36-20 half-time lead and though Guyana out-scored them 20-14 in the third quarter, the winners kept their nerve down the stretch to close out strongly.
There was no such success for Barbados who extended their losing streak to three straight, as they went down 84-59 to the Bahamas after suffering a third quarter meltdown.
They led 17-15 after the first quarter and though they surrendered the lead, the game remained competitive at 37-31 in the Bahamas’ favour at half-time.
However, Barbados slumped badly in the third quarter, out-scored 24-8, and not even a strong final quarter could compensate.
Dale-Marie Cumberbatch carried Barbados with 24 points and seven rebounds while for the Bahamas, Shanea Armbrister dominated with a game high 25 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
