ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has described Kirani James’ 400m victory at the Commonwealth Games as “another historic milestone” for the Grenadian quarter-miler.

James powered to the finishing line in a Games record time of 44.24 seconds to add Commonwealth gold to his Olympic and World Championships triumphs.

He was considered the favourite in the event as he commands this year’s fastest time and a personal best of 43.74 seconds.

Prime Minister Mitchell heaped praised James for his achievement saying that it was “another historic milestone in the life of a very special young man; equally important is the achievement to our nation”.

The Grenadian leader also congratulated Kurt Felix who captured Commonwealth bronze for Grenada after placing third in the decathlon event.

“To Kirani, Kurt Felix, who placed third in the decathlon event…, and to the other young athletes competing at the games, and to all our young men and women who are aspiring to be successful and productive, your Government and people will do whatever we can to support your endeavours by investing in your future,” Dr Mitchell said.

“By so doing, we are making a down payment on the future of this beautiful nation.”

James’ gold was the first for Grenada in the history of the games and the third overall following Felix’s bronze and a silver won by Alleyne Francique in the 400m in Melbourne, Australia, eight years ago.
