Black River Day
BLACK RIVER, St Elizabeth — For the second year in a row, the Black River chapter of the St Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the St Elizabeth Parish Council, hosted Black River Day on July 31, the eve of Emancipation Day.
Thousands jammed the streets of the St Elizabeth capital to witness a range of cultural and entertainment events, including a float parade, mento yard, jonkanoo, street dancing, and talent shows.
The activities culminated with an Emancipation Vigil to commemorate the formal freeing of slaves in August, 1838.
Organisers told the Jamaica Observer Central that Black River Day was “a great success”, with the promise of becoming “bigger and bigger” in years to come.
