Mitchell, Le-Roy strike gold among 13 medals at PanAm Festival

Gold medals from sprinter Sheldon Mitchell and quartermiler Anastasia Le-Roy led Jamaica’s 13-medal haul in the track and field segment of the First APA Pan-American Olympic Festival, which got under way at Pallilo Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, over the weekend.

After winning a silver and bronze on Friday’s first day of the two-day championships, the Jamaicans added 11 more medals on Saturday, two gold, four silver and five bronze medals to finish fifth in the medal standings.

Cuba topped the track and field medal standings with 21 medals — seven gold, 10 silver and four bronze, followed by the Mexico’s 16 comprising four gold, four silver and eight bronze; USA with nine — three gold, two silver and four bronze, and Venezuela which had three gold medals.

Meanwhile, Audra Segree won two medals, adding a bronze in the women’s 200m to the silver she won in the 100m on Friday.

Sprint hurdler Shermaine Williams, Allodin Fothergill, Deuce Carter and Josef Robertson all won silver medals on Saturday, while Andrea Bliss, Jermaine Brown, Nickiesha Wilson and Bobby-Gaye Wilkins all won bronze medals.

Mitchell ran a personal best 20.14 seconds to win the 200m gold medal as Cuba’s Roberto Skyers just edged Jermaine Brown for the silver as both were timed in 20.28 seconds.

Jamaica’s other competitors Kegan Campbell was 14th overall with 21 56 seconds, while Akeem Williams was disqualified.

Le-Roy, who was part of the gold medal winning 4x400m team at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland two weeks ago, ran 51.28 seconds to win the women’s 400m as Jamaica copped two medals in the event with Wilkins taking bronze in 51.84 seconds. Cuban Daysiurami Bonne took silver in 51.78 seconds, while a third Jamaican, Jonique Day was 10th in 56.50 seconds.

Fothergill took the men’s 400m silver in 45.47 seconds beaten by the Dominican Republic’s World Championships and Olympic Games medallist Leguelin Santos in 45.06 seconds. Cuba’s Yoandys Lescay just edged Jamaica’s Chumaine Fitten for the bronze, clocking 45.54 seconds to beat Fitten’s 45.56 seconds. Alvin Green was eighth and Miguel Barton 10th.

Shermaine Williams and Andrea Bliss took silver and bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles behind Panama’s Ivette Lewis, who won with 12.86 seconds. Williams was just beaten to the line clocking 12.91 seconds as Bliss, a semi-finalists at the World Championships, clocked 13.18 seconds.

There were also silver medals in both men’s hurdles events; Deuce Carter was second in the 110m hurdles in 13.51 seconds beaten by Barbados’ former world champion Ryan Brathwaite in 13.41 seconds, with Eddie Lovett of the British Virgin Islands third in 13.62 seconds.

Robertson ran a personal best 49.04 seconds for second in the 400m hurdles that was won by Jeffrey Gibson of the Bahamas in 48.91 seconds. Isa Phillips was fourth in 50.42 seconds.

Wilson was third in the women’s 400m hurdles in 56.64 seconds and Shevon Stoddart fourth in 56.88 seconds. Mexico’s Zudikey Rodriquez Nunes won in 55.78 seconds and Zuriam Echevarria of Cuba was second in 56.54 seconds.

After her silver in the 100m on Friday, Segree got bronze in the 200m, running 23.15 seconds as Ecuador’s Angela Tenorio copped the double, winning in 22.82 seconds with British Virgin Islands’ Alison Peter second in 23.03 seconds.

Samantha Curtis was fifth in 23.40 seconds and Venicha Baker eighth in 24.01 seconds.

Also on Saturday, Raymond Brown was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 18.62m. Adrian Tulloch was seventh in the men’s 800m in 1 minute 53.92 seconds; Tarasue Barnett was seventh in the women’s discus throw with 54.91m; Gleneve Grange was eighth with 52.69m, while Shanice Brown fouled all her attempts, and Ashawni Wright failed to get past the opening height in the men’s high jump.
