Windies on top after declaration leaves slow Chanderpaul stranded
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) – Veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul was left stranded short of his 30th Test century as West Indies declared to heap pressure on Bangladesh at lunch on the pivotal third day of the opening Test here Sunday.
Chanderpaul was left unbeaten on 85 as West Indies called time on their first innings at 484 for seven, after resuming the day at Arnos Vale on 407 for three.
With just over an hour left to negotiate, the visitors stumbled to 41 for two with new-ball bowlers Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor sharing the wickets to fall.
Opener Shamsur Rahman was unbeaten on 15 at the break and was accompanied by Mominul Haque on 14.
West Indies struck as early as the fourth over of the innings when Roach had Tamim Iqbal taken low down by Darren Bravo at second slip for one. Taylor then prised out Imrul Kayes for nine, Bravo taking another low catch at second slip as the left-hander chased a wide delivery.
Earlier, opener Kraigg Brathwaite’s marathon innings ended on 212, when he was caught square on the onside by Mominul Haque off debutant left-arm spinner Taijul Islam who finished with five for 135.
He added just seven to his overnight 205 and all told, the 21-year-old batted for nearly 9-1/4 hours, faced 447 balls and counted 14 fours.
Wickets then fell quickly as West Indies went for quick runs. Jermaine Blackwood, in only his second Test, missed a heave at seamer Rubel Hossain and was lbw for ten and captain Denesh Ramdin holed out to mid-wicket for five off Taijul, 18 balls later.
Jerome Taylor got off the mark with a sweetly-timed straight six off off-spinner Shuvagata Hom and followed up with a boundary to mid-wicket in the next over off Taijul before holing out to long on for ten.
Resuming the day on 51, Chanderpaul tried to increase his scoring but with his innings gathering no significant pace, he found himself stranded with the innings declaration.
