Dominican officials turn over 14 suspects to US
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Dominican authorities have extradited 14 suspects to the US to face a slew of drug, extortion and fraud charges.
The group was turned over to agents with the US Drug Enforcement Administration yesterday at an air base in the capital of Santo Domingo.
The suspects did not contest extradition and are expected to be tried in a federal court in New York.
Miguel Medina is a spokesman for the Dominican National Drug Control Agency. He says most of the suspects are alleged members of a gang that was broken up in late May with raids requested by the US.
Medina alleges that the gang members extorted US victims by phone and also impersonated DEA agents. Three other alleged members of the gang were extradited earlier this year.
