WHAT THEY SAY – Fitzgerald Richards
When did you start your career as a trainer?
I started my career as a trainer in 2007.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner was Navajo Joe at 6-1 in the Albert Rose Trophy over 5 ? furlongs. For me that day is one which I will never forget. It was inspiring.
Who was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner was Ever Blessed at 99-1 with jockey Leo Miller over 7 ? furlongs. Truly blessed on that day.
Which horse is the best horse you have trained?
I have trained some very good horses so far but for know I would say Change Him Name who has won three consecutive races. That is difficult these days especially in the lower classes.
Which horse is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
Well I have seen three good horses in Menudo, Mark My Word and The Viceroy. My stable is very close to Richard Azan’s who was the trainer of both Menudo and Mark My Word, so I was able to watch from a close vantage point how these horses developed, they were exceptional. And what can I say about The Viceroy, one of the best ever. There have been others but these three standout for me.
Who has influenced your career most?
Well I have always been impressed with Kenneth Mattis especially when I just came in the business of training horses. But, I have to give all credit to Rowan Mathie who is my boss and mentor and I really appreciate all that he has done for me. Mathie is very special.
