Muschett High make it 6 straight in Western Conference basketball
BOGUE, St James — Former champions Muschett High won their sixth straight game in the Under-19 section of the ISSA Western Conference high school basketball competition after beating Herbert Morrison 35-33 in a low-scoring game on Friday.
After taking over the lead in the second quarter of the game played at Herbert Morrison, Muschett held on to win by two points and maintain the lead with 12 points, one more than Cornwall College, who beat Holland High 92-23 at Holland.
Cornwall College lead the Under-16 section after beating Holland 76-2 and are on 15 points, followed by Herbert Morrison, who have won all seven games to be on 14 points, with St James on 11, Muschett on 10, and defending champions Spot Valley on nine.
On Friday, Herbert Morrison and Muschett were tied 6-6 after the first quarter, but the visitors surged into the lead outscoring Herbert Morrison 12-9 to lead 18-15 at the half.
Herbert Morrison cut the deficit to one point at the end of the third, 24-25, but Muschett dug deep in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win with Lamon Thompson leading the way with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Damaine Thorpe scored seven points in support.
Herbert Morrison, however, prevailed in the Under-16 game, running out easy 57-10 winners, as Alek Gilchrist got a triple-double of 13 points, 25 rebounds and 10 steals, and Brendan Dawkins got a double-double of 25 points and 20 rebounds.
At Holland, Cornwall College restricted the home team to two points in the second quarter of their Under-16 game, as three players scored in double digits led by a triple-double from Odaine Whittaker with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals; Nicholas Gilchrist with 18 points and Giovanni Bailey with 15 points.
Andrew Johnson scored a game-high 34 points for Cornwall in their Under-19 win to go along with 11 steals and 11 assists, Anthony Mowatt scored 14 points and had 19 rebounds, Antonio Spence scored 16 points, while Paul Brown had 10 points.
On Thursday, St James High rebounded from their loss to Herbert Morrison earlier in the week to beat Spot Valley 40-23 in the Under-16 section.
Trey Brown’s 14 points, 10 steals and nine rebounds led St James to their fourth win, while Aaron Allen scored 11 points and 17 rebounds.
Meanwhile, national Under-19 champions William Knibb Memorial have been belatedly allowed to take part in the competition after initially missing registration.
William Knibb beat Spot Valley 64-25 on Thursday and were awarded points from Holland High in both sections in a forfeit yesterday.
Don Michael Fray scored 27 points for William Knibb, while Errol Steel got 16 points and Daniel Henry got 15 points.
