Golf tourney raises $1m for skills training centre
THE Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament presented a cheque for $1 million to Sister Benedict of the Laws Street Trade Training Centre at the tournament’s awards function at the Constant Spring Golf Club in Kingston on Monday night.
Sister Benedict said that the funds received annually from the organisers of the tournament annually helps, the centre to carry out critical functions such as to give food and care packages to over 300 persons every other week, and training residents in the surrounding community in sewing, baking and computing.
She said that when the centre started many years ago as an outreach of the Holy Family School where she was principal, it was the community members who indicated the skills that they were interested in learning. Sister Benedict also said that the centre will continue to serve the community as long as they get the support to do so.
Peter Chin, president of title sponsor Alliance Investment Management and also head of the Jamaica Golf Association, had high praises for the over 140 golfers who played in the tournament as well as the sponsors.
Chin said that he was pleased to assist the Laws Street Trade Training Centre and said that the Centre will always be the beneficiary of the tournament.
This is the 19th year of the tournament and the seventh consecutive year the Alliance Investment Management is sponsoring it.
Dethroned defending champion Fabian Campbell congratulated fellow professional golfer Wesley Brown for winning the tournament. He said that he had received some unsettling news at the start of day two and this resulted in his poor showing after ending day one on 74, like Brown. He also said that next year he will return for the championship.
Campbell ended the tournament in third position behind Alfred Robinson and Ewan Peebles, who shared second place.
The Men’s section went to Sean Morris, who was happy to come out the winner ahead of Jonathan Newnham, who ended on just one stroke behind. Third position was shared by Bryan Bailey and John Donoghue.
The Men’s Senior title went to Radcliffe Knibbs, while last year’s winner Rory Jardine dropped to second, and third went to Philip Prendergast, who led on day one.
The Men’s Super Senior section had an exciting finish with a play-off between Phillip Wilson and Easton Williams, but Wilson came out the winner. Chin and Buccaneer’s Teddy Richards shared third place.
In the Ladies’ section, Tiana Cruz got the better of Kei Harris, who was followed by Rochell Prince for third place.
In the Men’s Junior section, Luke Chin edged Max McCloy, while third went to Sebert Walker Jr.
