Outpouring of grief on social media over death of UWI med students

Friends, relatives and associates of 19-year-old medical students Danielle Hanson and Mikhail Campbell have taken to social media to mourn the tragic and untimely death of the two in a motor vehicle crash early yesterday morning.

The students, who attended the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, died when a BMW motor car driven by Hanson crashed into another vehicle on Old Hope Road in St Andrew about 1:00 am. Campbell was a passenger in the BMW.

Official police reports are that the motor vehicle was heading in the direction of Papine when, upon reaching a section of the roadway, the car Hanson was driving reportedly hit the curb and she lost control of the vehicle, colliding with a Toyota Prado travelling in the opposite direction.

As the news spread on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, comments and tweets poured in and mourners grappled with the fact that the two had died.

In disbelief, social media users posted:

Moneire Pinto: can’t believe she really gone, in shock right now #Jahkno, R.I.P rest in paradise

Minimalista: I feel so sad 🙁 RIP Mikhail Campbell

Britney-Lee: R.I.P Danielle Hanson, i’m in shock

Young Thug: First thing I saw on social media this morning is that Danielle Hanson is dead. I cannot believe this

Kathryn: Today we mourn the loss of our own Mikhail Campbell. Our hearts [are] with them, may his family’s sorrows be lifted. May his soul rest in peace.

PJ: Condolences to the family and friends of Danielle Hanson and Mikhail Campbell. The UWI has lost 2 great bundles of potential. May they RIP.

Official bodies within the university also used the medium to share their sadness at the passing of the two students.

The UWI Mona Guild tweeted: Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Danielle Hanson and Mikhail Campbell. #RIP

Rex Nettleford Hall said on Instagram: Let us take the opportunity to reach out to God on behalf of the family of Danielle Hanson, who lost her life last night. Danielle was a first-year student and a Rexan. We also extend condolences to the family of Mikhail Campbell, who also died in the accident. May their souls rest in peace.

The UWI Mona Commuting Students posted on Facebook: Our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of Danielle Hanson and Mikhail Campbell… According to the Jamaica Observer, the two were reportedly involved in a motor vehicle accident earlier this morning on Old Hope Road, St Andrew. After being taken to the hospital, both students were pronounced dead.

We ask that you keep their families in your prayers as they come to terms with the passing of their loved ones.

May their souls Rest in Peace.
