Squash team wins two of Ja’s four medals at CAC Games
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s national squash team won two of the four medals won by Jamaica at the 2014 Central American & Caribbean (CAC) Games which wrapped up on the weekend in Veracruz, Mexico.
Newcomer Lewis Walters left his mark on the tournament after winning a bronze medal in the men’s individual competition. The 26-year-old made it to the semi-finals, ensuring Jamaica was on the medal stand after his team mates, Chris Binnie and Bruce Burrowes were eliminated in earlier rounds.
No doubt buoyed by Walters’ solid performance, the Jamaican men then rallied to battle their way to the semi-finals in the team competition on the weekend where they faced tournament favourites Mexico.
After suffering defeat at the hands of Arturo Salazar in the individual competition, Binnie regrouped to beat the Mexican 11/9, 11/2, 11/8. However, Walters lost 5/11, 8/11, 3/11 to Cesar Salazar and then Burrowes lost 3/11, 1/11, 6/11 to Alfredo Avila, ending Jamaica’s campaign with a bronze medal.
“All in all we are pleased with the team’s performance at the CAC Games because we’ve come away with two medals at an event where Jamaica won a total of four,” said Gill Binnie, national team manager.
“It’s great for the sport that squash was able to boost Jamaica’s overall medal tally and we look forward to continuing to write our country’s name in sports history,” she added.
