14 go on hunt for Wassy Bike Gold Cup
A high-powered and aggressive field of 14, expected to be full of spirit and fight, will converge for the $1,500,000 Wassy Bike Gold Cup (Grade One) to contest the only graded stakes race on the 12-race card at Caymanas Park today.
First post for the extended programme is at 11:15 am with the Gold Cup feature going 1,400 metres slotted in at the penultimate stage of the call.
The favourite’s tag among this pungent group of talented runners falls to Typewriter 1-1 on the morning line. The five-year-old son of Western Classic is the most accomplished entrant, coming off a victory in the November 8 (Grade One) Superstakes.
Prior to that, he won two Open Allowance races in the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Trophy (1820 metres) and the Owen Silvera Memorial Cup at 1,600 metres. Typewriter won these events very comfortably with performances that signalled his return to top form at the back end of the year when he is engaged in his most profitable races.
His credentials, especially in big races, are well known, and with his perfect partner jockey Shane Ellis in the saddle once again and even with the reduction in journey and the competitiveness of the field, he is expected to prevail and make it four from four despite being again saddled with top weight of 57.0kg.
While Typewriter is expected to come away with the major slice of the purse, it will be no cake-walk as it is a race that much late and early speed is present by the inclusion of the newly-crowned Caribbean Sprint champion Potcheen; Invitational Mile winner Pete’swildone; Perfect Neighbour, who finished third in the Superstakes; Guineas winner Talented Tony K, who will just love this journey; Campesino, who has just scored back-to-back victories over the distance, All Correct and Franfield.
