Tifa, dBURNZ blaze Beer Wednzdays
DANCEHALL diva Tifa and rising singer and dub poet dBURNZ created a musical inferno inside the A-Bar Restaurant and Lounge at the Springs Plaza on Constant Spring Road, St Andrew, on Wednesday night.
It was the third staging of the weekly series Beer Wednzdays Live and the jam-packed venue comprising university students and young professionals enjoyed the night’s musical offerings in absolute delight. With the energetic Flash Mob band in tow, Melbourne Douglas, known as dBURNZ, delivered a tight and entertaining set.
The thirdyear UWI student, who is studying Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management, reeled off his original efforts including Run Babylon, Revolution, as well as covers of Little Willie John’s Fever (made popular in the late 1950s by singer Peggy Lee) and Bob Marley’s Waiting in Vain.
“This is my third consecutive performance on Beer Wednzdays and it’s been a good vibe. We had fun on the stage and that’s basically what it’s about: having fun while performing,” dBURNZ told the Jamaica Observer after his performance. For Tifa, the reception that greeted her was phenomenal.
“The vibe was crazy and the response from the crowd was outstanding. It was a good show,” she said.
Her set saw a variety of offerings which included Christmas carols, slow ballads, dancehall favourites and acoustic numbers.
Bottom of the Barrel, Spell it Out, Dash Out, Matie Wine, Move Yuh Body, Going to the Chapel, and her recent hit Bak it Up, had the female members of the crowd singing along.
The male members of the audience were not left out, as the performer interacted with them musically and physically.
Newcomer Dexta Daps joined her on stage to perform their collaborative effort Jealous Ova (produced by Daseca Productions). An acoustic performance of Wanna Get High featuring a guitarist was also well-received.
Omar Dattadean, trade development executive at Red Stripe, sponsors of the event, was pleased with the night’s proceedings. He explained how the idea for the series came about.
“What we saw was consumption of beers skewed towards the weekends and we came up with the term Beer Wendzdays to increase sales during the week.
This of course includes all of our beer brands, and we have over 300 participants across the island. This live performance series will be visiting different locations around the island, the same great beer, and the same great taste.
We encourage our patrons to drink responsibly,” said Dattadean. Previous stagings of Beer Wednzdays were held at the Countryside Club (featuring Nomadzz) and Triple Century Sports Bar (featuring Kalado). — Kevin Jackson
