GRENADA-BASED artist Malaika Brooks-Smith-Lowe — six weeks in residence at the New Local Space (NLS) initiative — hosted the opening of her exhibition, May Nothing Stay Hidden, to rave reviews last weekend. The exhibition, sponsored by Three Sixty Degrees, TrueSelf Centre of Being and private benefactors, had the artist using her Jamaican-born immigrant grandfather Derryck Brooks-Smith-Lowe, a retired research chemist and educator, who now calls Brooklyn, New York home, as her muse and tackling such psychological themes as abandonment, separation and yearning under the culturally familiar Caribbean. Employing inherited cabinetry, glass panels, tea-dyed paper, LED lighting, dried confetti of bougainvillea petals, video, and strips of photographic negatives — what’s more, a cosy interior-designed nook reminiscent of a period living room,where, thanks to Creative Sounds, the artist could be overheard in an audio-taped convo with the exhibition’s familial muse — Brooks-Smith-Lowe weaves a focused mixed-media snapshot of the Everyman’s journey and mnemonic reservoir.
