Ardenne thrash Jonathan Grant to keep win streak going
ARDENNE High school made it four wins from as many games in Group D of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Grace Shield cricket competition with a 117-run thrashing of Jonathan Grant High at the latter’s home ground in St Catherine on Wednesday.
William Thomas’s workmanlike all-round performance saw the Simon Jackson-coached team extending their lead atop the group as they moved up to 24 points.
Scores: Ardenne 188-9 dec; Jonathan Grant 71 all out.
Batting first, Ardenne, led by a knock of 58 by Thomas, put together a moderate total, which turned out to be even more competitive than was expected. Mickayle Riley was the next best scorer with a contribution of 25 against Delroy Grant’s four for 42.
Thomas later returned to grab five for 20 and Kalvin Brown two for three as Jonathan Grant struggled to get up to the target. Chandae Chatrie and Grant both made 25 runs apiece in putting up little resistance.
Champions Eltham High bounced back from their previous defeat at the hands of Ardenne to score a nine-wicket win over second-placed Spanish Town High. The win pushed Eltham to 14 points, while Spanish Town were suffering their first loss and remain on 18 points.
Scores: Spanish Town 41 all out; Eltham 42-1.
Ramone Francis took six for 13 to restrict Spanish Town to the paltry total which saw Gifton Mullings (15) as the only batsman to get into double figures. Wicket-keeper batsman Shaquille Brown then made 26 as Eltham easily surpassed their target. Levon Edwards got the lone wicket.
Meanwhile, Pembroke Hall High also came out on the winning side, defeating Tivoli High by seven wickets in the other Group D fixture.
Scores: Tivoli 95 all out; Pembroke Hall 97-3.
Warren Robinson picked up nine for 77 to single-handedly restrict Tivoli High, with Akeem Haughton top-scoring with an unbeaten 63. Haughton then bagged all three wickets for 25 runs in a losing cause as Pembroke Hall made light work of their target.
Over in Group B, Papine High handed leaders Wolmer’s Boys their first defeat of the season with a nine-wicket win.
Scores: Wolmer’s 93 all out; Papine 94-1.
Malik Thompson (38) scored most runs for Wolmer’s as the other batsmen failed to come to the fore. David Bird (three for 45) and Roshawn Lee (three for five) did the damage with the ball.
Andre Bailey (35) and Keath Magowan (37) easily guided Papine to victory with a businesslike approach.
