Westgreen advance in KO with shoot out win over Copperwood
WESTGREEN, St James — Westgreen FC won for the first time this season as they beat Copperwood 3-2 on penalties at Westgreen to advance to the second round of the St James Football Association Captain’s Bakery and Grill Knock-out.
Melbourne FC also advanced after a 1-0 win over Revelations FC at the UDC field, but the game between Super League team Violet Kickers and Senior League team Catherine Hall was not played.
Westgreen FC, who had lost all three Division One games played and Melbourne FC join 11 other qualifiers for Tuesday’s second-round draw.
Defending champions Granville United, Premier League team Montego Bay United, Seaview FC, Mountain Villa, Marl Road, Reggae Youths, Montego Bay Boys Club, Little Miami, Heights FC, Montego Bay United Under-21 and Seba FC have also advanced to the second round.
On Friday, Westgreen FC took the lead twice before Copperwood came back and force extra time. Andrew Smith opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but Junior Hibbert equalised for Copperwood in the 31st as they went to the half-time break tied at 1-1.
Dwight Johnson scored in the 56th minute for Westgreen FC to retake the lead, but Rayon Campbell brought Copperwood level again in the 75th minute.
Extra time failed to produce further goals and Westgreen prevailed on penalties.
At the UDC field, Trevon Allen scored in the 72nd minute for Melbourne as they got the better of Revelations FC.
