What They Say! – Fabian White
When did you start your career as a groom?
I was introduced to the sport by my mother (Evelyn Beckford) and my aunt (Miss Elyse). I was around trainer Fitz Crawford and from there, I became addicted to racing. I got my groom’s licence in 1970.
Which horse was your first winner?
Miss Muffet was my first winner. Andrew Ramgeet rode her that day going over 1,200 metres. I was so excited when she won. I felt I was walking on the moon that day. I was working at Kenneth Mattis’s stables at the time.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
The same horse that I won my first with was my longest odds winner. Miss Muffet won and paid a little over $300. At that time it was $5 for a win ticket, but it doesn’t really matter the odds as I am always happy when I win a race.
Which is the best horse that you have groomed?
Without a doubt Mento Maid is the best horse that I have groomed so far in my career. I won the Red Stripe Superstakes with her, the only filly in the race. She didn’t win any of the Classic races but the way she handled them in the Superstakes was just phenomenal. Mento Maid was just special to me.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
I have seen a lot of talented racehorses here at Caymanas Park, but I would say that Legal Light is the best. Legal Light won his races very impressively at all times, always giving his best each time he raced. Royal Dad, who was a Triple Crown winner, was also a very outstanding horse. However, I give the edge to Legal Light.
Who influenced your career the most?
My mother (Evelyn Beckford) and aunt (Miss Elyse) both gave me encouragement and support at all times. There are others, of course, so I thank them all.
