STETHS ease past Munro to lift 27th Grace Headley Cup title
TREASURE BEACH, St Elizabeth — Favourites St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) yesterday eased to an innings and 80-run victory over parish rivals Munro College in the final of the three-day ISSA/Grace Headley Cup at the Treasure Beach Sports Park.
The title, which was wrapped up shortly after lunch on day two, was their 27th in the rural area competition.
STETHS captain Ramaal Lewis, who struck a first-innings century, also took 11 wickets in the match as Munro were twice bowled out for 109.
Scores: STETHS 298; Munro 109 and 109.
St Elizabeth Technical’s Clive Ledgister, who was coaching the school to their eighth rural area title in nine years, said he was not surprised victory was completed that soon.
“We know Munro and we executed well as a team and Ramaal scored a century. He also took 11 wickets and that was a good thing as captain,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“It was easy for us because we only batted once and we bowled them out for small totals both times,” Ledgister said, while lamenting the ease with which STETHS have dominated schoolboy cricket in recent years.
The 18-year-old all-rounder Lewis, who is also the Jamaica and West Indies skipper, was hitting his second hundred in as many games.
“I feel great because those were my last two Headley Cup games. It’s great to leave school on a high, so I just hope to now have a look-in at the senior level,” Lewis said.
Munro’s coach Tedroy Bromfield, who guided the school to their first rural area final since 1974, was disappointed the batting folded the way it did in both innings, but said the players and supporters are happy they “reached this far” and are hoping for future success.
Kerrene Grant, business banking executive at First Global Bank, while noting “the good spectator support” seen over the two days, said parent company GraceKennedy is pleased to be involved in schoolboy cricket.
Yesterday, Munro, resuming their first innings from an overnight score of 77-7, were bowled for 109. Openers Owen Campbell and David Curtis topscored with 20 each.
Lewis, bowling off-spin, grabbed 7-34, while left-arm spinner Lenardo Salmon claimed 3-33.
Trailing by 198 runs on first innings, Munro were again dismissed for 109.
Campbell again led the way with 38, while marquee batsman Mark Parchment contributed only 26.
Lewis and Salmon once more were the architects of Munro’s demise on a pitch which offered sharp turn for the spinners. The captain took 4-36, while Salmon captured 4-37.
