Shane Ellis revels in four-timer
Top-notch jockey Shane Ellis celebrated his reunification with trainer Anthony Nunes by riding four winners at the Park on Saturday. Two of his winners, Come Dance With Me and Bars of Gold, are trained by Nunes, while the others were Power Of The Cat and Terra Marique.
By virtue of his four-timer, Ellis has brought interest and some intrigue to the jockeys’ championships. He started the day in fourth position but ended in joint second-place with three-time defending champion Dane Nelson on 24 winners each – two behind Omar Walker on 26. Robert Halledeen is next on 23 winners. Nelson, Walker, and Halledeen went winless on the day.
Despite riding several Classic and major race winners over the years, Ellis has only worn the crown of champion jockey once. This is what he said: “A good day for me, but let’s wait and see how the season unfolds. There are a lot of races left to be run.” He is expected to try for another Classic race win on Saturday and is likely to partner Berranca again for Nunes in the Jamaica Oaks.
In fifth position is Aaron Chatrie, who is on 17 winners, followed by Jevvanne Erwin (15), Paul Francis (13), O’Brien White (10), Shamaree Muir (nine), and Rayan Wilson also on nine.
