St George’s win Portland Major League title
Port Antonio, Portland — Former National Premier League team St George’s Sports Club snatched the Portland FA Western Union Major League football title from defending champions Manchioneal last Sunday at Carder Park after defeating them 2-0.
Oneil Brown in the 45th and Jason Tracey in the 91st minutes were the men on target.
St George’s, led by Dainian Reid, seized early control of the midfield and got passes through to Delon White and Tyrone Brown, while Manchioneal tried to counter through Maurice Clarke, Rondee Smith and Kesslon Hall.
Veteran St George’s player Daniel Shaw had two good free kick opportunities from outside the penalty area, but Manchioneal custodian Anton Crossman had little problem handling them.
St George’s took the lead just before the break when a Daniel Shaw free kick from the right flank was floated into the area for Brown to head past the helpless Crossman.
And St George’s confirmed their dominance when Tracey picked up the ball after a defensive error, dribbled goalward before firing beyond Crossman at his near post.
The winners were presented with the championship trophy and $110,000, while Manchioneal were awarded $70,000. Both teams have advanced to the Eastern Confederation Super Eight play-off.
Losing coach Lamon Henry was disappointed with the outcome of the game. “We came to the game in the right frame of mind, but unfortunately the team did not turn up,” he said.
However, winning coach Carl Brissett was elated.
“It was a tactical game and it worked for us and we are thankful. We have to work on the fitness for the Super Eight.”
