Carib Cement prove tougher than ATL
Last season’s beaten finalist Carib Cement went one better when they won this year’s Kingston & St Andrew Business House one-day, five-a-side football rally and took home the Pronto Porridge Mix trophy after defeating ATL 3-1 in penalty shoot-out in the final last Saturday at the NWC playing field, Mona.
Eighteen teams participated in this year’s renewal. Carib Cement had defeated Gleaner Company 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out in their semi-final after playing to a 0-0 stalemate, while ATL clipped first-time entrant Peak Bottling 1-0 in the other semi-final. The final was a ‘David versus Goliath’ affair with Division Two contenders ATL taking on the Division One team and former champions Carib Cement.
It was a closely contested affair with Troy Reid, Warren Blackwood, Craig Roberts, Sharmarie Lawrence and goalkeeper Jerome Lawson keeping the fancied Carib Cement at bay.
Carib Cement countered with Ricardo Scott, Elton Thompson, Alanzo Adlam, Jermaine Freckleton and goalkeeper Lamone Malcolm.
After an exciting full- and extra-time draw, it was down to the dreaded penalty kicks. Lamone Malcolm was the hero as only Shamarie Lawrence scored against him, as he saved three spot kicks. Elton Thompson, Jermaine Freckleton and Alanzo Adlam scored their spot kicks to give Carib Cement victory.
The Western Sports-sponsored Business House Football League competition will kick off on Sunday, May 24, 2015, with the dress parade and a double-header at the Red Stripe Oval starting at 1:00 pm.
