Santos Masters lift Champion of Champions trophy
SANTOS Masters clipped Constant Spring Master 2-1 in extra-time to win the 2015 Bucmars Champion of Champions trophy on Sunday at Winchester Park.
In a keenly contested match, which Constant Spring dominated for spells, attacking players Oniel ‘Chippy’ McDonald, Orville Mullings, Robert Scott, Andrew Chisholm and Gary Hylton were denied from scoring by Santos’ Dalton Roberts, Kirk White, Bernard Blackwood, Barrington Planter, Owen Johnson, Damion Jones and goalkeeper Andrew Sewell.
Constant Spring took the lead in the 40th minute when Mullings was left unmarked in the six-yard box and he headed a perfect cross from McDonald past a hapless Andrew Sewell in goal.
Santos got the equaliser in the 47th minute after coach Lyndon Dawes moved Barrington Planter to midfield, and a lovely combination involving Clint Reid, Kevin Lamey and John Flemming, allowed the latter to get by defender Durrant ‘Tatty’ Brown and Craig ‘Warlord’ White and he fired the ball past advancing goalkeeper Kirk Williams.
Santos got the winning goal six minutes into extra-time as Reid released Planter down the left flank and the wily former Rivoli United player turned his marker inside out before shooting powerfully past a diving Williams.
Neville Lyn was honoured by the Masters League Football Association for his outstanding service to football in Jamaica, while Clyde Jureidini is the patron for the 2015 season. The league will continue on Sunday with 14 matches.
