Howard Cooke rule Western Primary Champs
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Howard Cooke Primary topped the overall points tables at Saturday’s 7th staging of the Western Primary Schools Athletics Championships at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Howard Cooke, which won the other overall title two years ago, tallied 224 points – 14 more than Barracks Road Primary who amassed 210. Defending champions Corinaldi Avenue Primary were third with 199 followed by Enfield Primary and Infant, 146.5, and Catherine Hall Primary in fifth place with 145 points.
Howard Cooke also topped the boys’ section with 135 points and were third in the girls’ with 89 points behind Corinaldi Ave, 106, and Barracks Road with 93.
Two-time champion Wakefield Primary finished sixth and outside of the top five for the first time since the inception of the championships.
Five records were broken on the day and one equalled with 16 of the 19 schools entered scoring at least a point.
Catherine Hall Primary’s Rouel Spence, who won the sprint double, clocked 12.46 seconds to break the record in the Class 1 boys’ 100m, beating the old time of 12.65 seconds set in 2012 by Wakefield’s Akeen Morris.
Alex Forbes of Howard Cooke Primary ran the Class 2 boys’ 400m in 1 minute 03.72 seconds to beat the old time of 1 minute 04.21 seconds set by Duncan’s Primary’s Antonio Watson in 2013.
Jodiann Thompson of new comers Fullerswood Primary set a new mark in the girls’ Open 800m, running 2 minutes 37.54 seconds, beating the 2 minutes 41.00 seconds set in 2009 by Fiona Jackson, then of Mt Ward Primary.
Kaheem Allen of Catherine Hall jumped 4.81m in the Class 1 long jump to pass the old mark of 4.74m set by Jauavney James then of Anchovy Primary in 2011.
The Howard Cooke Primary boys’ Class 2 4x100m team clocked 54.19 seconds, breaking the 54.24 seconds set by Barracks Road Primary in 2010.
Shanique Vassell of Howard Cooke Primary equalled the girls’ Class 2 100m record of 13.33 seconds that was also run in 2013 by Ocho Rios Primary’s Akelia Hylton.
There was a two-way tie for the boys’ overall champion between Romeo Lee of Barracks Road Primary and Catherine Hall’s Spence – both with 18 points.
Three girls tied on 18 points for the overall points-champion – Howard Cooke Primary’s Carleta Bernard, Howard Cooke Primary’s Shanequa Vassell and Corinaldi Avenue Primary’s Keimashay Blake.
