Minions Madness
On Sunday (July 11), Carib 5 was the venue for the local screening of the Despicable Me prequel Minions. Hundreds of children and parents came out to view the special screening which was organised by title sponsors Capri-Sun and Monumental Partners Limited. The lines to enter the theatre were long, but it was well worth the wait as the kids got a chance to take pictures with their favourite minions, and be entertained by the energetic host – Jenny Jenny.
Once inside, patrons were presented with a variety of complimentary snacks and giveaways from other sponsors. They were treated to food from KFC, drinks from Capri-Sun, snacks from Frito Lay as well as sweet treats such as yogurt from Dairy Industries. The lobby was essentially a child’s heaven, but this did not distract them from the main treat, the movie which the patrons eagerly ventured into Cinemas 2 and 3 to watch. With the kids and parents seated and equipped with 3D glasses, the patrons were greeted by a quick word from the event’s main sponsors, and then the movie was underway.
Minions itself is a prequel to the 2010 animated hit Despicable Me and its follow-up in 2013, Despicable Me 2. The film follows three of the minions (Stuart, Kevin and Bob) as they set on a journey across the world to find the most evil villain under which they can serve. After a long journey to Villain-Con, the minions unwittingly earn the honour of serving the world’s most evil villain, Scarlet Overkill. But they soon become her targets when she starts to think that they betrayed her. In fighting her off, the movie ends with them discovering Gru, which cements the back-story to the Despicable Me films. Though the movie is targeted specifically at kids, the older folks in the audience enjoyed it as well, as it had a few jokes which only they would understand.
By all accounts, the organisers went all out to ensure that it was be a day the kids would never forget as the giveaways kept rolling in. In addition to free popcorn from Palace Amusement, they also had the chance to answer questions and win prizes from sponsors like the Jamaica Observer, KFC and Frito Lay. Notably, Nicki Franklin, Hazel Black Whyte and Shonoya Lee, winners of the Capri-Sun Naturally Fun! Minions Summer 2015 promotion were all specially treated with Capri-Sun Minions baskets and a case of Capri-Sun.
Finally, upon exit of the cinemas, all the kids got a goodie bag which included a Minions-themed lunch kit with Capri-Sun, sweet treats, an activity book and a box of crayons. The children were ecstatic by the day’s proceedings, and seemed to be wishing that they could re-live the day.
Asked how she felt about the event, Capri-Sun’s Brand Manager Candice Minott simply stated “Capri-Sun and the Minions are such a perfect fit, both are about family and little adventures and when Minions want to have fun they go all out, hence what we have done here today.”
