Charly Blacks, the Party Animal

Charly Blacks, the Party Animal

EIGHT months after its release, Party Animal by singjay Charly Black is enjoying a resurgence.

Produced by Kurt Riley for Techniques Records, Party Animal is featured on the Jambe-an ‘riddim’ and is distributed in Europe by French company P2S Records.

Black, who is currently in Africa for some shows, is surprised at the renewed interest in Party Animal.

“We did the song a while now and I have been getting a lot of feedback from persons around the world about how well it is doing. Promoters from different countries have been reaching out so that’s when I realised that something was happening,” Black told Splash.

Party Animal is on main charts in Spain and Germany, as well as Honduras, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Israel, Dominica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the east African country, Mauritius.

According to Charly Black, “A lot of doors have been opening up for me, especially in the Spanish-speaking countries.”

Overseas success is not new for Charly Black, whose real name is Desmond Mendez. Wine and Kotch, a collaboration with J Capri, was a minor hit in Europe three years ago.

Originally from Rio Bueno in Trelawny, he started as a selector on Montego Bay sound system Warlord International. He moved to Bass Odyssey out of St Ann, of which he is still a member.

Formerly known as Tony Mentol, he made his recording debut in 2004 with Woman Its You produced by Tree Top Records.

Prior to Wine and Kotch, he had a hit in Nuff Nuff Love.

While he has built a fan base outside of Jamaica, Charly Black is yet to attract similar attention at home.

“It doesn’t bother me at all. Different strokes for different folks. I have it all to please my fans all over the world,” he said.

Charly Black is scheduled to perform in Cape Town, South Africa this weekend before heading to Johannesburg. Next week, he performs in Zimbabwe.
