Jamaica suffer mixed fortunes on day 4 of Pan Am Junior Badminton Champs
JAMAICA suffered mixed fortunes on day four of the Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships in Tijuana, Mexico, on Wednesday.
In the younger age groups misfortune was the order of the day. In the Under-15 age group, newcomer Tahlia Richardson went down to Brazil’s Sania Lima 8-21, 5-21, while Rhys Reid lost to Melendez of Mexico 18-21, 14-21. Reid and Richardson paired up for a valiant battle against Peru in the Under-15 mixed doubles event but eventually succumbed 28-30, 17-21.
In the Under-13 age group Zane Reid lost in straight sets to Moises Lima of Brazil 13-21, 17-21, while in the Under-11 age group Jamaica’s Keyon’dre McBean paired with Guatemalan Chen Ye and were overwhelmed by Mexico’s boys doubles pair of Jimenez and Lopez, losing 3-21, 8-21.
Shane Wilson and Alana Bailey, last year’s bronze medallists in the Under-17 age group, easily disposed of Mexico’s Martinez and Diaz 21-14, 21-8. Wilson continued his form in the boys’ singles against Colombia’s Montenegro, winning 21-8, 21-16. In the Under-19 boys’ singles Jamaican Sean Wilson, seeded number five, battled in the first game against Suriname’s Aubrey Chung Tong securing a 25-23 win, but went into second gear in the second game to close out the match 21-10.
