Man accused of stealing nine fire extinguishers
A man, who is accused of stealing nine fire extinguishers from the University of the West Indies in Mona, Kingston, was remanded into custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The 38-year-old accused, Marlon Grant, a resident of Kingston 11, was remanded in custody last Friday after the investigating officer informed the court that the accused was being investigated for the theft of two other fire extinguishers — one at the Fly Jamaica building and the other at the Electoral Office of Jamaica.
The accused is charged with nine counts of simple larceny and larceny by trick.
The court heard that between July 17 and July 20 this year, Grant went to the Nursing Department at the university and stole the fire extinguishers, valued at $114, 000.
It was reported that he returned to the department on July 22 and was accosted by a security guard while trying to enter a lecture room, after he was recognised by someone as the person who was allegedly seen stealing the fire extinguishers.
It was also reported that Grant sold one of the fire extinguishers to a man for $15,000, but later returned to the person, claiming that he could service the equipment. He was allegedly given the fire extinguisher but it was never returned to the individual.
Grant was subsequently remanded until September 10.
