Women accused of smuggling SIM card into lock-up in meal
TWO women who are accused of trying to smuggle a Digicel SIM card into a police lock-up in a meal of rice and chicken were granted bail when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The accused, Petagay Wilson and Brianca McMurray, both 19, of Tavares Gardens in Kingston were offered bail by Resident Magistrate Grace Henry-McKenzie in the sum of $30,000 each.
Police reported that on August 21, about 10:00 am, both accused went to the Hunts Bay police lock-up and handed over the meal to the police for the inmate. However, when the food was searched a SIM card was reportedly found hidden among the rice.
Both accused were arrested and charged with introducing contraband into a penal institution.
Yesterday, when the women appeared in court, McMurray pleaded not guilty, while Wilson pleaded guilty with explanation.
Wilson told the court that she and her friend went to Three Miles to purchase fish when a man asked them to deliver the food and to give it to a woman name ‘Miss Duffus’, but when they got there she was not there.
“I didn’t put it in the food and I didn’t realise it was there,” Wilson said.
The magistrate then told her that based on her explanation she could not accept her guilty plea and scheduled the matter for trial on September 16.
