Medical doctor dies in car crash
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — Popular Westmoreland medical doctor, Barrigton Clarke, died early yesterday morning in a motor vehicle accident on the Montpelier main road in St James.
The 57-year-old Clarke resided at the Llandillo Housing Scheme in Westmoreland.
Police reported that about 4:00 am Clarke was driving his blue Toyota Axio motor car towards Savanna-la-Mar when he lost control of the vehicle, which veered across the road, rode an embankment and overturned into a citrus field.
The doctor, who was trapped in the mangled vehicle, had to be cut from the wreckage by the Fire Brigade. He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead by his colleagues.
Scores of mourners who gathered at the doctor’s office yesterday expressed disbelief at his death.
“I can’t believe say Dr Clarke dead. Good people always dead,” a man was overheard saying. “A so life go,” added a teary-eyed woman.
Clarke’s death comes on the heels of the death in August of Montego Bay attorney-at-law, George Thomas, 68, a former president of the Cornwall Bar Association. Thomas died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash along Montego Bay’s Elegant Corridor on Thursday, August 20.
The deadly crash, which involved Thomas’s Mercedes Benz and a Nissan Tiida motor car, reportedly occurred at the traffic lights at the Providence Heights/ Whitehouse intersection.
Meanwhile, Clarke’s death, brings to 11, the number of people who have died as a result of injuries sustained in traffic accidents in
St James since the start of this year. During the similar period last year, 16 people died from injuries they sustained during traffic accidents.
