Father accidentally drives vehicle over toddler
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Police are investigating the death of a one-year child after her father said he accidentally drove his vehicle over her while reversing out of the yard at his home in Rio Claro, south of here.
“I know this road and I know it does not have any humps on it. A cold chill came over my belly when I got out of the vehicle and I went to the back on the left side. I saw my daughter Salabila lying on the ground,” said Ashmeed Mohammed.
Speaking on television, he said that when he picked her up she was bleeding from the nose. She was later pronounced dead at a health facility. An autopsy was expected to be done yesterday.
The death of Salabila is the latest ordeal that Mohammed has had to deal with after a newspaper earlier this year published a lead story wrongly claiming that he was training with the Middle East militant group ISIS and was preparing to fight for that group in Syria.
He was also accused of plotting to kill Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in 2010.
“Allah gave her to us and He has taken her back. As sad as it is, we have to understand that it is a fact…we have to realise and accept that life goes on,” Mohammed said.
