Thompson targets Schippers in Brussels today
JAMAICA’S Elaine Thompson will have a chance of redemption when she takes on Dafne Schippers at the Brussels Diamond League today in a mouth-watering 200m clash that also includes American superstar Allyson Felix.
Twelve Jamaicans will be in action in the final Diamond League of the season at the Memorial van Damme, the destination of 16 of this season’s winner-take-all Diamond races that will be decided in Switzerland.
Thompson, the rising female star of Jamaica’s athletics, ran a splendid 21.66 seconds at the World Championships but could only cop silver in the 200m, and she will come face-to-face with the event’s victor, Schippers and Felix, who are both in the hunt for the Diamond trophy.
With the winner of the event pocketing eight points, Felix leads with 10 points ,just ahead of Jeneba Tarmah on nine, Schippers and Candyce McGrone on four points with an outside chance. Sherone Simpson will add more Jamaican flavour to the race.
Meanwhile, Stephenie McPherson is the only Jamaican with a chance of winning a Diamond League trophy today as she currently occupies second spot in the 400m with 10 points. American Francena McCorory leads with 16 points, hence McPherson needs to win and hope that McCorory is not in the top three.
McPherson will be joined by two members of the 4x400m gold medal-winning team in Christine Day and Novlene Williams-Mills, and World Championships silver medallist Shaunae Miller and Natasha Hasting, setting the tone for an exciting race.
Former world record holder Asafa Powell, fresh from his sub-10 win in Zagreb, once again will take on Justin Gatlin, Nesta Carter and Jimmy Vicaut in the 100m.
Gatlin, with 12 points, holds a seven-point advantage and is a safe bet to secure the Diamond trophy.
World Championships shot put bronze medallist O’Dayne Richards is not in contention to be the overall winner, but will certainly make his presence felt among the two contenders in Joe Kovacs of the US and German David Storl. Both are on 14 points each after sharing three Diamond League victories apiece. The event will also have Reese Hoffa, Tom Walsh and Ryan Whiting.
Nickel Ashmeade will line up in the 200m, which will feature Gatlin, Alonso Edwards, bronze medallist Anaso Jobodwana of South Africa and his countryman Wayde Van Niekerk, who struck gold in the 400m at the World Championship.
New national 400m record holder Rusheen McDonald and Pete Matthews are down for the men’s 400m, alongside the Borlee brothers Dylan and Kevin. Also in the mix are Renny Quow of Trinidad and Tobago and American Kyle Clemons.
Kimberley Williams, who finished fifth in the triple jump at the World Championships, gets another shot at overall champion Catherine Ibarguen of Colombia, who secured the Diamond trophy with 22 points.
