Portia working to make SW St Andrew ‘crisp like a biscuit’
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Member of Parliament for South West St Andrew Portia Simpson Miller on Sunday vowed to continue developing her constituency until it is “crisp like a biscuit”.
Speaking at the constituency’s annual conference, Simpson Miller, who is also the president of the People’s National Party (PNP), said critics have always singled out the appearance of her South West St Andrew constituency.
“Once upon a time, the criticism and the cry was that ‘look how South West St Andrew look’ – even from some of our own people outside of this constituency,” Simpson Miller said. “Well, I will have no shame, no excuse, at every opportunity to ensure that South West St Andrew become a first-class constituency…”
The MP said her constituency has never “let go” of her and she is going to continue working to ensure that it becomes a model constituency.
“…They talk about inner-cities, them usually curse me, ‘look on her constituency’, and when you’re fixing it up now, they still complaining about what you doing,” the member of Parliament charged. “I am not going to stop the journey until this constituency crisp like a biscuit in terms of achievements between the member of Parliament and the councillors of this constituency.”
During her presentation, one of the constituents in the audience could be heard shouting: “Yuh gi wi good place fi live, we love yuh!”
Some of the developments in the constituency that Simpson Miller outlined includes the upgrading of the Hagley Park Health Centre through the Ministry of Health; the refurbishing of the Oak Glades Training Centre; roadwork in Greenwich Town, Whitfield Town and the Payne Land Division; as well as the cleaning of several drains and upgrading of the sewage system in the Majesty Gardens area.
The MP also thanked the Cari-Med Foundation for their gift of a multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art infant school in Union Gardens.
“Yea, they just have to look over there and in some other areas; they usually curse and say we don’t have any proper housing in here, but we fixing it, and I not done yet,” Simpson miller charged. “When we finish, South West St Andrew must be a model constituency for all to see.”
