Cuthbert for University of Texas’ Sports Hall of Fame today
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Veteran Jamaican sprinter and Summer Olympic Games’ double silver medallist, Juliet Cuthbert Flynn, is to be inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Fame at a function today in Austin.
Cuthbert Flynn is among 13 distinguished and decorated former University of Texas student athletes and staff, who will be inducted into the men’s and women’s athletics Hall of Fame today.
The new members of the Hall will also receive a special salute during the Texas Longhorns’ football game vs Oklahoma State on Saturday.
A three-time Olympic medalist, three-time NCAA champion and 11-time Southwest Conference champion, who helped the Longhorns to a pair of NCAA team titles, Cuthbert was one of the top sprinters in the school’s history. She helped spark the dominance of the Longhorns from the mid-1980 through the 90’s in the Southwest Conference and Big 12 Conference.
Cuthbert won her first NCAA title in 1985, claiming the 200 metres outdoors. During her senior year in 1986, she completed the sprint double by winning the 100m and 200m.
Her victories in 1986 helped the women win the team title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also played a role in helping the women win the NCAA Indoor title in 1986, as well. It was the programme’s first team national championships in both indoors and outdoors.
The team swept the SWC Championships in 1985 and 1986 to set the standard for the Longhorns and spawned a run of 12 straight indoor titles and 11 total outdoor wins to dominate the last decade of the SWC.
Cuthbert won 11 conference titles during her career, including three each her junior and senior years. She won the 100/ 200 metres double in 1985 and was a member of the winning 4×100 relay. In 1986, she won the 200 and ran legs on the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. The success she saw as a Longhorn carried over into her professional career, as she competed in the Olympic Games four times, winning three medals, one as a member of a relay team and two of them individually.
She made her Olympic debut in 1984, while attending UT, and reached the semi-finals of the 100 meters. In 1988 she reached the final of the 100 meters, finishing seventh. Cuthbert made the next step during the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, where she won silver medals in both the 100 and 200 metres.
In 1996 in Atlanta, Cuthbert won bronze as a member of the 4×100 relay and finished seventh in the 200 metres. She also has won four medals at IAAF World Championships, including gold for the 4×100 relay in 1991.
She still holds the school record for the 60 yards, a race that has since been discontinued. Her fastest time as a Longhorn in the 200 meters outdoors remains No 8 on the all-time performers list.
