The House that Hill built
RODNEY Hill has earned his third number one song on Billboard’s Dance Music Club Play Chart with Feel the Vibe by French DJ Bob Sinclar featuring gospel singer Dawn Tallman.
Hill is artiste and repertoire for the project. Previously, he worked in a similar position on the chart-topping singles, World Hold On (Children of the Sky) by Sinclar featuring Steve Edwards; and Sinclar’s 2006 hit Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) featuring Cutee B, Dollar Man, Big Ali and Makedah.
London-born Hill (whose parents are Jamaicans) resides in New York where he has been living since his late teens. Hill also lived in Jamaica and attended Campion College.
In an interview with Splash, he explained how he got involved in music.
“I feel like music found me. I had no intentions or desire to be in music in my youth. I had a good friend named DJ Callie Ban who worked with Marley Marl (American rapper/producer) and I used to go with him to Marley’s house where I was surrounded by a lot of hip hop artistes and was exposed to production, recording, etc, which peaked my interest,” he explained.
“I met Junior Cat through a mutual friend and we hit it off. Eventually, he felt comfortable enough with me to conduct a minor business transaction which then led me to become his road manager. Later, I began to work for his brother Super Cat in the office of his company, Wild Apache, alongside Early B, Nicodemus, DJ Papa, Ainsley Rifle from the sound Killamanjaro, and the band City Heat,” he continued.
In his current role, Hill selects artistes for tracks, coordinates budgets, studio time, assists with the direction, style and sound of the song, and coordinates release dates. He also liaises between the producer, artiste and record label, and helps promote the respective songs.
For the past 11 years, he has done all this for Sinclar.
“I met Bob on the Love Generation European Tour, and after speaking to him we both realised that we had the same musical vision. And 11 years later, we’re still working together,” Hill said.
He worked on Sinclar’s 2010 album, Made in Jamaica, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. It had collaborations with Shaggy, Queen Ifrica, and Tony Rebel.
Hill focuses on House, a genre which has allowed him to network with some of that genre’s biggest names, including Eva Simons, Sidney Samson, Duane Harden, Spankers, Paolo Ortelli, and Fedde LeGrande.
He has done A&R work on remixes for Ne-Yo, Ciara, Rita Ora and Mariah Carey. His upcoming projects include singles by Sinclar, Sidney Samson, and Paolo Ortelli. There is also a new Spankers album.
