Smith treble carries Wolmer’s to 5-0 win
ROJAY Smith registered his first hat-trick of the season to lead Wolmer’s High to a 5-0 thrashing of Mona High in their ISSA/Flow, Manning Cup game at Heroes Circle yesterday.
Wolmer’s, who are locked at the top of Group E with St Jago on 19 points, but with a game in hand, scored their goals through Alphonso Gooden (8th minute), Rojay Smith (10th, 78th, 89th), and an own goal from defender Kristoffe Coombs in minute 29.
Knowing that they must beat Mona to have chance to top Group E, Wolmer’s went on the hunt for goals from the first blast of referee Keble Williams’ whistle, and with the game still young, Gooden opened the scoring with a powerful right-footed shot in the eighth minute.
Two minutes later, hat-trick hero Smith put Wolmer’s two goals to the good with a ferocious shot that forced goalkeeper Jean-Luke Wilmot back into his goal. Wolmer’s continued to press for more goals, and on minute 29, Coombs redirected a Jahwahn Hinds shot past his ‘keeper Wilmot.
After this, Mona settled down and inhibited the marauding Wolmer’s from increasing the score until after the break. On the resumption, Wolmer’s faced a different Mona than in the first half, as the latter created sufficient chances that could have reduced the deficit, but their attempts were wayward.
